Upham's Corner Library
Exploration of integrated design through cultural, technological, and ecological frames, focusing on timber systems and culminating in a Boston Public Library branch proposal
Spring 2023 | Studio Praxis II | Section Professor: Gerard Damiani | Instructor: Jeremy Ficca

The project site is located in the Upham’s Corner neighborhood of Boston, with the primary objective of designing a public library that actively engages with the surrounding community and environment. The site is defined by a historical cemetery and residential area to the east and a commercial district to the west. The library’s design reflects and responds to these contextual conditions through spatial organization and orientation. The main entrance and lobby are positioned on the west side, adjacent to the commercial area and the active streets of Columbia Road, while private rooms and quiet study areas are situated to the north and east, closer to the residential context and cemetery. To integrate the building into its surroundings, the roof is sloped toward the south, aligning its elevation with neighboring structures. The structural system employs a hybrid of metal trusses and mass timber elements, including glulam and cross laminated timber (CLT), enabling a cantilevered form that serves as a visual and experiential focal point for visitors. Environmental considerations are addressed through the incorporation of shading devices and advanced glazing systems, mitigating annual sunlight exposure and minimizing glare while enhancing interior comfort.
